New Study Indicates That All Meats It is known that processed meats are not good for the body and have been linked to different pathologies. However, fresh red meats and white meats such as chicken or turkey are not considered harmful in this regard, but a recent study indicates that all meats, including poultry, could increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Using data from six prospective cohort studies conducted in the United States, this research published in JAMA Internal Medicine included a total of more than 29,000 adults to analyze the link between the intake of processed meat, fresh red meat, poultry or fish and Incident cardiovascular disease as well as mortality from all causes.
The diet data were collected between 1985 and 2002, while the participants were followed until 2016. The results show an association between the intake of processed meat, fresh red meat and poultry and cardiovascular disease.
Specifically, it is known that processed meats and red meats generally increase the risk of cardiovascular disease by 3 to 7% as well as increase the probability of death from different causes.

Although the increase in cardiovascular risk is low, it is worth the recommendation to reduce the intake of fresh and processed red meat to take care of overall health.
Likewise, a 3% increase in cardiovascular risk was observed due to the intake of poultry, a minimal increase that may be due to the way in which the chicken is cooked, therefore, it is advisable above all to avoid chicken skin and the fried chicken as well as with burnt crust.
Fish was not linked to cardiovascular disease and poultry consumption was not significantly associated with increased risk of death from different causes.
This study calls into question the conclusions of a previous report in which it was pointed out that there is no evidence to reduce the consumption of meat. However, it seems best to include quality meats such as chicken or turkey breasts and, above all, bet on fish to obtain proteins of animal origin.
