Its implementation, advanced by El País, will reinforce the coffin deposit function that is already being carried out since this week in the Ice Palace. The decision was made due to the increase in the number of patients affected by Covid-19 and after the Municipal Funeral Service Company stopped attending to these cases due to the lack of protective material for its employees.

The enclosure of the City of Justice “would have all the guarantees for the function entrusted at its opening” and would allow around 200 corpses to be housed in the conservation chambers and premises with which the building is endowed, as specified by the regional Executive . In the last days conditioning works are being carried out and to guarantee the electrical supply in the facilities with a budget approved by the emergency route of 40,000 euros.

“This is an exceptional and temporary measure to facilitate the work of the funeral services and mitigate the pain of the relatives of the victims and the situation that is being registered in the hospitals of the region,” said the Government of Isabel Díaz Help on a device that is being coordinated by the Ministry of Justice and Interior.

Its owner, Enrique López, explained in an interview on Onda Madrid that funeral services are “overwhelmed” because before this health crisis, 60 to 70 people died on average in the region. According to the last official balance, 322 people with coranaviruse have died in just 24 hours, bringing the total number to 2,412 fatalities.

The new emergency morgue will open in the only building that was ever built in the City of Justice devised by Esperanza Aguirre and which is popularly known as donuts because of its shape. The one that was to be the headquarters of the Institute of Legal Medicine had not been used until now and remained as the symbol of an ill-fated project paralyzed in 2009 in whose implementation some 100 million euros were invested.
